European Congress of Radiology defies the crisis
The figures prove that even in the face of current economic difficulties, first-class quality still ensures success. 274 scientific presentations and 25 industry-supported Satellite Symposia and Hands-on Workshops bore witness to the most recent developments in science and research.
Special highlights were presentations on the importance of radiology in early detection of breast cancer, the role of CT and MR in major trauma, radiofrequency ablation (RAF) of the liver and lung tumours, and strategies for radiation dose reduction.
The ECR has also made a massive contribution to the Viennese economy over the years, and especially to tourism. Via ESR's own Travel Service platform alone, more than 80 hotels took bookings from ECR participants; and Vienna's major cultural institutions, be they museums, opera houses or concert halls, rejoice each year at the increased number of visitors during the first weeks of March. The local gastronomy and business industries also enjoy a welcome boost in sales at this time of year.
ECR is the annual meeting of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), whose president, as of today and until the next congress, is for the first time an Austrian; Professor Christian J. Herold, Chairman of the Department of Radiology, Medical University Vienna. ESR has remained faithful to Vienna since 1991, being the only event on this scale to take place annually in the Austrian capital. The next European Congress of Radiology will take place from March 4–8, 2010, in its usual location, the Austria Center Vienna.
