New 640-slice CT delivered to the heart of Italy

In partnership with Fora S.p.A., diagnostic technology company United Imaging has provided Policlinico Casilino Hospital with a new 640-slice CT (computed tomography) scanner to upgrade its diagnostic center.

Located in the southeast of Rome, Policlinico Casilino Hospital is a renowned medical institution within the Eurosanità S.p.A. Group. The hospital has a Level I DEA emergency room, which, with about 70,000 admissions each year, positioning it as one of the leading centers in the Roman emergency. This impressive facility has 236 inpatient beds, 16 Day Hospital/Day Surgery beds, and nine operating theaters. Additionally, Policlinico Casilino features a dialysis center with 19 stations for both hemodialysis and peritoneal treatments.

The hospital's extensive surgical department provides a wide range of specialized services, including oncological and emergency surgeries, as well as procedures in vascular, orthopedic, trauma, urology, plastic surgery, and ophthalmology. Similarly, the medical department is dedicated to comprehensive patient care, delivering highly specialized services in cardiology, internal medicine, and gastroenterology.

Our powerful platform and AI-empowered workflow, such as single-click patient positioning thanks to the uAI Vision camera, ensure efficient processing and superior diagnostic accuracy, supporting large daily patient throughput while maintaining high image quality

Beyond its Level I DEA Emergency Department, the hospital boasts a well-equipped Intensive Care Unit, along with a specialized Cardiology Intensive Care Unit. Recognized as one of Italy’s leading facilities for maternal-infant care, Policlinico Casilino excels in gynecology, obstetrics, and neonatology, handling over 4,600 deliveries annually.

The Diagnostic Imaging Unit delivers a wide range of diagnostic services, from advanced cardiac assessments to interventional radiology procedures. Policlinico Casilino sought a leading-edge CT technology that could meet evolving patient needs. Consequently, the hospital has chosen to install the uCT 960+ scanner from United Imaging

The uCT 960+ is the company's flagship CT scanner, featuring an ultra-wide 82 cm bore and a table weight capacity of 318 kg to accommodate a diverse range of patients and ensure a comfortable experience. With a 16 cm z-axis detector, 0.5 mm detector size, and a 0.25-second rotation speed, the uCT 960+ provides excellent imaging quality in a shorter time, significantly enhancing diagnostic accuracy and increasing patient throughput, the manufacturer reports. These capabilities are further supported by AI-powered technologies, enabling the uCT 960+ to produce high-quality images at reduced radiation doses, all while streamlining the diagnostic process.

United Imaging highlights features of the scanner, focused on its Z-Detector technology:

  • 3D-printed anti-scatter grids effectively reject scattered photons, improving CT imaging results.
  • Through-silicon-via (TSV) technology enhances detector performance by reducing electronic noise.
  • The company's reconstruction technology mitigates cone beam artifacts, minimizing diagnostic errors.

The system is designed to run 60 kVp scans to reduce radiation dose without compromising image quality. Another featured technology is uAI Dose Modulation, which automatically recognizes different body regions (chest and abdomen), adjusting noise levels and radiation doses accordingly. Finally, uAI Easy-ISO carefully adjusts the patient's surface dose distribution for each examination.

"Our powerful platform and AI-empowered workflow, such as single-click patient positioning thanks to the uAI Vision camera, ensure efficient processing and superior diagnostic accuracy, supporting large daily patient throughput while maintaining high image quality," United Imaging reports.

The scanner is also equipped to specifically assist in cardiology imaging, with proprietary technologies CardioAssist, CardioAdapt, CardioXphase, and CardioCapture. These are based on deep learning algorithms, developed to freeze coronary motion with a time resolution of 25ms, streamlining the workflow and enhancing diagnostic confidence.

One-stop 4D stroke imaging solution transforms stroke care by providing comprehensive information from anatomical structure to functional measurements.

Shuttle perfusion technology provides a dynamic perfusion scanning range as wide as 40 cm, and variable bed speed, facilitating precise evaluation of tumor vascularity and treatment response.

United Imaging points out that the technology embodies their commitment to enhancing global access to diagnostics and transforming patient lives. "Each installation of our equipment serves as a testament to this dedication," the company concludes, expressing their sincere gratitude to Fora S.p.A. for their invaluable collaboration.
