MEDICA - a benchmark for nursing organisations
MEDICA - the most important event in the world of healthcare - displays the entire range of products, solutions and innovations relevant in this sector. The event is therefore also important to nurses, for they can discover and examine new equipment and other products and directly contact the manufactures and distributors.
The EU nursing guidelines are due to be evaluated and checked from 2009 to 2012. Reason enough to discuss concerns regarding the possible effects of any planned harmonisation. The advantages some EU countries have by offering three types of nursing training – specialising in either paediatric and general nursing as well as geriatric care – are that candidates can make an early choice as to their preferred field of specialisation without having to take a detour by having to complete the basic training first, which would extend the length of the nursing training. This also means that recruitment for these jobs can be done in a more targeted manner, allowing for an early reaction to any potential staff shortages. On the other hand, harmonisation could also be achieved by making it easier to switch between those nursing roles after specialised basic training.
For many years, the German Nurses Association (DBfK) has co-hosted the German Hospital Conference, which takes place during MEDICA, together with the Working Group for Nursing and Care Organisations (ADS). Apart from the opportunity to visit the exhibition, taking part in the various training programmes offered alongside the event is another attractive reason for a trip to Dusseldorf.
Against the background of significant changes in the hospital sector, obtaining up-to-date information, exchanging ideas and learning from others has become essential.
Therefore, on 21 November, the Nursing Forum at the Hospital Conference will present renowned lecturers to talk on subjects such as staff ratios, skills mix and continuity of care.
