World Health Summit 2011
The World Health Summit, to be held in Berlin on October 10 - 13, 2010 will bring together researchers, physicians, leading government officials and representatives from industry as well as from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and health care systems. Its aim is to address the most pressing issues that medicine and health care systems will face over the next decade and beyond and to develop cogent and timely responses regarding the health of populations worldwide.
The World Health Summit takes place under the patronage of the German Federal Chacellor Angela Merkel and the French President Sarkozy. It is organized by the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, together with the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers and Medical Universities, as well as the 60 most important National Academies, the WHO and the EU. In collaboration with these partners, the organizers of the summit have managed to mobilize significant national and international scientific institutions and to include prominent players from the fields of science, medicine, health economics and civil society, as well as high-ranking politicians.
Health is a fundamental human right (UN Declaration 1948). It is of utmost importance for individuals and all societies. Despite the immense rate of progress we are facing in the medical sciences, we are lagging enormously behind. At present more than half of the world’s population is not receiving proper medical care. The summit will address the most urgent challenges in medical research, global health and health care delivery with the aim of providing the results and recommendations to decision-makers from all relevant fields.
This is an ambitious objective in an increasingly complex environment of globalization and international interdependency. Taking a cross-sectoral approach, the World Health Summit 2011 will therefore, for the third time, bring together leading figures from the fields of science, politics, economics and civil society in order to stimulate networking and the sharing of ideas. By close collaboration in analyzing today´s evidence and by extensively sharing international experience and debate, the summit seeks to structure tomorrow’s agenda.
“The M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers and Medical Universities” was founded on occasion of the first World Health Summit in 2009. It is a network of prestigious medical institutions dealing with scientific, political, and economic issues related to medicine and public health, together with stakeholders from politics, society, non-governmental institutions and industry worldwide. This international network gives the World Health Summit an outstanding academic background. The M8 Alliance was created as a permanent and sustainable platform for framing future considerations of global medical developments and health challenges.
After the World Health Summit 2010, Sao Paulo University and National University of Singapore joined the network. With the accession of the two prestigious academic institutions, the M8 Alliance now consists of twelve members from five continents.
