Steerable ERCP cannula: a new option for complex cannulation

Launched at the 28th Düsseldorf International Endoscopy Symposium

Fujifilm Healthcare Europe GmbH has introduced the FlexCan Cannula, a specialised device for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedures, designed with enhanced flexibility and rotational performance.

Manufactured by Fujifilm Medwork Germany, FlexCan was recently launched to the European market at the 28th Düsseldorf International Endoscopy Symposium. The cannula is compatible* with Fujifilm's Eluxeo 8000 endoscopy solution.

At the 28th edition of the symposium, Prof. Jochen Weigt, from the Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg, presented initial impressions of the device: "The new specialised FlexCan Steerable ERCP Cannula has a build that is similar to a sphincterotome. It shows superior rotatable function, has a shorter bending section for easy use in a small lumen and can be used with a straight wire. First impressions — it may facilitate difficult cannulation such as juxtapapillary diverticulum, and targeted cannulation such as branching strictures. It may also facilitate access in bilio-digestive anastomosis. I look forward to planned studies to explore the benefits further."

FlexCan is designed with a tip capable of 90-degree angulation, intended to support precise control in challenging endoscopic positions. The bending section begins 9 mm from the tip, which may assist manoeuvrability in narrow lumens. These features aim to address cannulation challenges in complex or difficult anatomy during ERCP procedures.

The cannula tip can rotate up to 360 degrees in both directions, offering directional control within the lumen. FlexCan also incorporates X-ray and endoscopic markers to support accurate positioning assessment during procedures.

With a tip diameter of 1.5 mm and a catheter diameter of 2.3 mm, FlexCan is available in both long and short versions, designed to be compatible with standard duodenoscopes as well as short and long enteroscopes. The device is intended to support cannulation using front-view enteroscopes during ERCP in patients with altered anatomy.

* FlexCan is compatible with the Eluxeo 8000 endoscopy solution and with endoscopes that have a minimum working channel diameter of 2.8 mm and a working length shorter than the nominal length of the product, according to the specifications.
