Digital PET/CT system debuts in the city of Gaudí

United imaging announces the successful installation of their digital PET/CT system uMI 550 at Centre Mèdic Alomar in Barcelona.

The installation, achieved in close collaboration with medical equipment provider APR Salud, expands the region's access to advanced molecular imaging, the company reports. As a provider of diagnostic imaging services in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, Centre Mèdic Diagnòstic Alomar operates a network of 22 centers equipped with MRI systems and a growing portfolio of technologies, including CT, ultrasound, mammography, and dental CT. The addition of the new digital PET/CT system further strengthens their ability to deliver precise, high-quality diagnostics and reinforces their role as a reference in advanced imaging across the region, the company adds.

The uMI 550 digital PET/CT system is engineered to bring advanced molecular imaging across a variety of clinical needs to a broader range of healthcare institutions. For this, the scanner is equipped with digital PET detectors, Time-of-Flight technology, and a 24 cm axial field of view. While it features a comprehensive cardiac workflow designed to simplify procedures and ensure high image quality, even with high count-rate tracers commonly used in cardiac PET studies. However, United Imaging points out that the system's strengths go far beyond cardiology - with intelligent imaging solutions equally suited for a wide range of applications, including oncology, neurology, and beyond. Addressing the growing complexity of modern diagnostic care, the system is available in both fixed and mobile configurations.

Among the features of the uMI 550 digital PET/CT scanner is the manufacturer's AI-powered "Hyper DPR" algorithm, which integrates a deep learning neural network into the PET image reconstruction process for improved contrast and reduced noise—especially in 18F-FDG studies.

The system is further equipped with the "Hyper Focus" respiratory motion management tool, which intelligently compensates for respiratory motion by using the patient's own breathing signal to create a single, motion-corrected PET image. Unlike traditional gating methods, it uses 100% of the acquired PET data and aligns it precisely with the CT image—resulting in sharper, more reliable images, particularly in areas like the lungs and upper abdomen.

The scanner also provides a streamlined, source-free approach to daily system quality control called "uCare.iQC", which leverages the intrinsic radioactivity of the PET detector crystals. This fully automated check can be scheduled overnight or performed at the start of the day, simplifying operational workflows and ensuring consistent imaging performance. According to the manufacturer, this feature was developed in response to customer feedback, and designed to enhance efficiency without compromising precision—and by eliminating the need for external sources and reducing manual workload, it also contributes to lowering the system’s total cost of ownership.
