Estonia – driving digital health transformation

While digital health remains fragmented across much of Europe, one EU member state has already connected its system end to end – and continues to push the boundaries.

Estonia has established one of the world's most advanced digital healthcare systems. With 99% of health data fully digitized, physicians have immediate access to complete patient medical histories at the point of care. Laboratory results are transmitted in real time, eliminating the traditional waiting periods of days or weeks. The system also features nationwide digital prescriptions that are instantly available at any pharmacy across the country – a standard since 2010. Patients retain full control over their data, including visibility into who has accessed their records.

According to the European Commission's Digital Decade eHealth Index, Estonia now ranks first in Europe for digital health. Recent initiatives such as the Goodwill Agreement for Health Technologies and plans to integrate genetic data into clinical practice demonstrate that the country continues to push the boundaries of digital innovation in healthcare.
