“MEDICA is an impressive shop window of the health industry. When it comes to cars, mechanical engineering and the chemical industry, everyone thinks of Germany’s capabilities straight away. However, it isn’t quite so well-known yet that we also have a leading place in the health industry. Set against the background of its economic significance and demographic developments, it is important that this sector should be put at the focus,” said Chancellor Merkel in her speech.

This was followed by a guided tour of the trade fair in Halls 9 and 10, on which she was accompanied by Germany’s Minister of Health, Philipp Rösler, and gained some first-hand impressions of the capabilities of the medical engineering industry.

MEDICA 2010 continues until Saturday 20 Nov. 2010, with more than 4,400 exhibitors from over 60 nations presenting innovations for a complete patient workflow in outpatient and inpatient treatment – from lab engineering and physiotherapy, through medical and electrical engineering to medical IT.

Chancellor Merkel’s full speech at MEDICA 2010 is available as an audio file from the Online Press Service of MEDICA 2010 at http://www.medica.de.
