The association is pleased to announce the appointment of Klaus-Dieter Axt as new Secretary-General. “We sincerely thank Annabel for her outstanding leadership during a time of transition” stated Jan-Willem Scheijgrond, COCIR President. “Her passion and commitment have made COCIR more focused, agile, and impactful. From refining COCIR’s strategic priorities and strengthening stakeholder collaboration, to amplifying our voice in research and innovation - her contributions have left a lasting legacy.”

Klaus-Dieter Axt will join from EUnited, the European Engineering Industries Association, where he has served as Executive Director since January 2021.

“I am honoured that the President and Board have entrusted me with the opportunity to lead COCIR and to work for the healthcare industry within the Brussels ecosystem and beyond,” said Mr. Axt. “I look forward to engaging with European policymakers, representing our industry’s interests, and contributing to the shared goal of a strong European Health Union.”

“This is a crucial time for our sector, which is simultaneously facing trade tensions, geopolitical uncertainty, and adverse economic conditions” added Jan-Willem Scheijgrond. “European life sciences must regain strategic autonomy and competitiveness to ensure the availability of medical technology solutions and fulfil their potential as one of the EU’s most dynamic sectors. We are confident that Klaus-Dieter brings the ideal skill set to this role and will elevate COCIR’s influence and visibility in support of our industry. We look forward to working with him.”

Among the first priorities Mr Axt will address in his new role will be supporting the revision of the Medical Device Regulation, advancing the implementation of the European Health Data Space, contributing to the development of the EU Cardiovascular Health Plan, and ensuring the successful execution of the Innovative Health Initiative.

Mr Axt will begin the transition into his new role in June and will assume full responsibilities by September 2025.
