E-health solution improves patient service and processing

Ethianum Heidelberg is going over to total paperless communication. The value is evident in the first step in new patient admissions. For their online medical history the hospital is using LifeSensor from InterComponentWare (ICW).

The hospital information system (HIS) triggers the registration of a LifeSensor medical history application even before a new patient is admitted. Patients receive an e-mail containing a link, user name and password to confirm their registration and activate the application. The HIS also sends a medical history form to the application automatically. Patients can use the form easily to document their personal and family medical history over the Web. They can also interrupt their session at any time without losing any data. The form is write-protected after a final signature is appended and LifeSensor automatically returns the form to the HIS.

As Dr Peter Görlich, Business Director at Ethianum, pointed out, ‘Our patients can take their time to fill out this important information in the comfort of their own homes. This reduces the number of errors while optimising costs.’

The LifeSensor medical history application is completely embedded in the administrative process workflow of the HIS. Transmission of the medical history form from the HIS to the online application is completely automatic. On receipt of the completed form the HIS imports the patient information as structured data directly into the hospital's patient medical record.

The ICW solution simplifies the work of hospital administrators in both directions: no printouts, no mailings, no physical handling of medical history data. ‘With LifeSensor at Ethianum we combine process optimisation with customer service,’ said ICW Board Member Jörg Stadler. ‘Comfortable data sharing between hospital and patient saves resources for the hospital while offering patients a new service.’
