Atrial fibrillation: Study makes economic case for pulsed field ablation
A new multi-country European study demonstrates that pulsed field ablation (PFA) using the Farapulse system delivers measurable economic and operational benefits compared with cryoablation and radiofrequency (RF) ablation for the treatment of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

The analysis, published in the Journal of Medical Economics, includes data from 270 procedures performed across three European centres in Prague, Modena and Valencia, representing the first multi-country economic evaluation of PFA in Europe.
Key findings:
- PFA showed cost savings of 10% compared with cryoablation and 22% compared with RF ablation, mainly driven by shorter procedure duration.
- Cost per responder was €2,406 for PFA, compared with €2,873 for cryo (+19%) and €3,436 for RF (+43%).
- Consistent and predictable procedure duration improves lab efficiency and capacity planning.
These findings highlight how innovation in ablation technology can support more predictable and sustainable healthcare delivery – particularly as health systems across Europe seek to optimise resources and reduce patient waiting lists.
